OUR STANDARDS:

OUR SERVICES, and HOW WE PROCEED

MORE INFO:

It may be that you simply want to produce your book for family and friends, and that's fine! But if an author is looking to put their book into the wider market, please note: we will be totally honest in what we believe about your book's open market potential; after that, it's up to you to decide on the way forward for your work.

We have been dismayed by the quality of most of the self-published books that have been sent to us to look at; clearly, many companies are willing to cheapen their services to bring in custom, without a care to the end product. We abhor this practice!

Even our "light" services that cater to smaller budgets are completed to a high standard. We do NOT just do a quick copy edit, i.e. pretty much leave your work as is (unless it really doesn't need much help!); we do the job right!

Some authors are more adept at the basics than others; therefore some books need more attention than others. We realise this, and while we adjust our pricing to suit the manuscript's needs, we will not compromise our standards.

If you want a "low-cost" job that won't do your work justice, please don't come to us; we won't do it. We like to think we do a "proper job"!

First, you contact us and tell us about your project, and we let you know our availability. Then you send us a sample of your book for a free assessment. We advise how much work we think either the individual services you've requested, or the whole self-publishing project, will need, and we quote you accordingly. We can negotiate to reach the right price for your budget, but without compromising our basic standards and quality. (See below for pricing guidelines, and please read the columns to left and right, too.)

Individual services are paid for on a separate job-by-job basis. Depending on the size of the job, we may require an initial part-payment up front.

Producing an entire book, from start to finish, can cost anything from £700 to £4000 or more, depending on its size, content, editing, and what other services are needed, such as illustration, indexing, etc. This must be quoted on the merits and needs of each unique manuscript.

If your book requires illustrations we can have these done by one of our numerous freelance artists. This includes children's or adult books, gift books, coffee table books, etc.

We specialise in attractive layout and design. We want your books, whether they are for children or grown-ups, to be appealing to their target audience in particular, but also to anyone who picks them up. But we do plain and simple, too! Let us know your preference and budget.

Our printers can undertake any size print run, from 1 into the thousands. They have the most reasonable pricing and quality in the UK, and in addition have the lowest carbon-footprint! Your pages won't come adrift, your spine won't crack under normal use, your book will look great, feel great, act great - and be environmentally friendly!

Pricing Structure:

For more information please read ALL the columns above.

DISCOUNTS OFFERED:
Faithwriter500 Members
are offered a 15% discount on our services (not on printing; sorry - we can't control that! - Please supply us with your FW500 Membership Number, to obtain your discount.

We realise that some manuscripts need a lot more work than others. The prices below are merely a NORMAL GUIDE to our charges but in extreme cases we may discuss (before starting work) an additional charge. We will try to work within your budget, as long as this does not compromise our output standards.

Our prices below are worked on a "normal" prose manuscript submission - i.e. A4 size, double-spaced, 12-point Times New Roman font and 1-inch margins all round - roughly 350 words per page for a book manuscript. When your digital file arrives, if the formatting is different we will reformat it, so that it fits our structure and there are no misunderstandings.

WRITER MENTORING:

A writer's on-the-job training course! One of our highly experienced, published writers will team up with you and mentor you through the process of writing your book. You will receive advice, guidance, coaching, and other support while you go through the challenge of learning to bring out the best in yourself, and finding out what this "getting published" lark is really all about. This is a consultancy service; our mentors do NOT write your book for you. Their job is to develop you as a writer - so you're paying for their knowledge, while you learn your craft. Contact us to find out more.

FULL SELF-PUBLISHING SERVICE:

Producing an entire book, from start to finish, can cost anything from £500 up, depending on its size, content, editing, and what other services are needed, such as illustration, indexing, etc. This must be quoted for on the merits and needs of every unique manuscript. Longer, larger or more complex books, or illustrated, or full colour, or hardback, and trimmed size, all have an influence on end cost. A slim, straight-forward paperback starts at around £500, but a complex full colour illustrated project is obviously going to cost a lot more. Contact us to find out more.

INDIVIDUAL MANUSCRIPT SERVICES:

There are several individual stages in the production of a book up to final print-preparedness, and we can undertake to do any one of those stages, or a combination (in which case we quote you differently - information below is to be read as INDIVIDUAL services). If you require more than just one or two of the individual services it may work out cheaper to simply undertake our full Self-Publishing service. Talk to us about the best way to proceed with your needs.

1. Assessment/Critique:

This is useful to authors who aren't sure whether their manuscript is good enough/professional enough yet to submit to publishers/agents, and don't want to spend the money on self-publishing if more work needs doing first. If you feel before going any further that you would like our professional opinion and advice for your manuscript, we will undertake to read the whole work, make notes as we go along, and then turn out a detailed report that will indicate problem areas and incorporate suggestions and advice for improving the storyline, characters, technique and style, or anything else that strikes us. We will also be completely honest about how marketable we think your manuscript will be, and how best to present it to publishers or agents.

Pricing: The cost will depend on the number of pages in your manuscript - we charge a minimum fee of £10, plus 25p per page. Thus a manuscript of 200 pages [as described above] will cost £60.00 to critique.

2. Cover Design and/or Illustration:

We can design your cover from scratch (all the books we have produced on this site have our own cover designs), do certain types of illustration, or find you an artist who can illustrate your book for you, depending on what your book requires. Cost depends on the intricacy of the design, of course, but as a guide a cover design can cost from £50 (if you supply all the artwork) to £500 (an intricate design from scratch by ourselves).

3. Proofreading:

This is not the same as a full edit. It is simply the act of going through your work and correcting grammar and punctuation, and sometimes querying facts. We do not use confusing professional proofreading signs! We give your manuscript back with pen markings and comments that are easy for you to comprehend and act on - or preferably we do this on a digital file in Word. In this case, we do the proofreading and then make the corrections for you. You receive a Word document that has the changes all marked so that you can see exactly what we've done, plus comments in the margins. None of these comments print out; they are "hidden", for you to accept or reject the changes we've made as you please.

Pricing: £3.00 per 500 words, or £5.00 per 1000 words for jobs over 5000 words, and £4.50 per 1000 words for jobs over 60,000 words.

4. Editing:

We are happy to take on small jobs as well as large, from-scratch editing or simply polishing. From-scratch editing is is a full copy-editing job, which includes a thorough read-through with notes, changes, comments and suggestions for improvements and rewrites, corrections, queries, etc. Polishing, finishing, finalising - so that you have an end product you can take for professional layout and formatting. (Note: Formulae and technical information are assumed accurate and therefore will not be edited. This is the author's responsibility.)

Pricing: For small jobs, please understand that we do need to lay down an initial minimum charge of £10.

Text:
£4.00 per 500 words,
or £7 per 1000 words for jobs over 5,000 words, and £6.50 per 1000 words for jobs over 60,000 words.

Tables:
normal page pricing applies, or where relevant a per-word charge will apply at £0.02/word.

Revisions
(ie further changes) are charged at only half the original costing.

5. Formatting and Layout: We can take a raw manuscript exactly as it is presented by the author, and do the typesetting, layout and formatting - or we can do this as a culmination to the full services listed above. The end product is a PDF file you can present to a printer of your choice, or we can follow through with our printer (see below). Ask for a quote, depending on your manuscript.

6. Printing: We can arrange for printing of your book, so that you receive the finished end product delivered to the address of your choosing. Our printer turns out high quality results, both in look and form - and a bonus is that they have a very small carbon footprint and excellent pricing structures.

7. All of the above: If you require more than just one or two of the above services it may work out cheaper to simply undertake our Self-Publishing service. Talk to us about the best way to proceed with your needs.

Contact us to find out more!

Remember that we will need to see your manuscript before we commit to undertaking any of the above services, and to give you an individual quote. We don't charge to look at and decide on your manuscript.
