Sunberry Books offers several options for getting your book into print.

1. FREE: PRODUCING YOUR BOOK AT NO COST TO YOU

This is our "extreme support" package for authors who are in a difficult position financially (most, actually!), which could suit those wanting to self publish but not having funding. This can mean no up-front costs to the author, but we have to truly feel the manuscript is worthy of our risk, our time, effort, and money - and that the author is willing to put in the effort to publicise and sell the book.

Very briefly: we undertake whatever is necessary to produce the book (this varies from manuscript to manuscript) - including cover design and any other illustrations necessary, if you don't have your own artist. This all takes manpower time and skill, which are costed to the project. We pledge to keep these costs to a minimum, and cost them out at usually about half of what most self-publishing companies work to (!). These costs are then offset against income from the book.

The book is printed through whichever of our printers we deem best for that particular project, is registered with both Nielsens and Bowker databases (i.e. internationally), goes onto the Amazon and other online stores systems, and the only cost of printing is the set-up fee (usually in the region of £50) that the printers require up front. We also ask our distribution channels to carry the book, but we cannot guarantee this; they choose books on an individual basis, as they see its merits and saleability.

The income that the book generates is FIRST used to pay off the costs the book has incurred (you receive the costing sheet and regular updates), and when the costs are paid off, then we start to pay you a royalty per book. We have to continue to keep some of it for our ongoing administration costs (usually you get 75% and we get 25%) - unless you have provided your own ISBN number and decide at that point to take on administration yourself, in which case the book becomes 100% your own.

Initial Outlay: The author gets to decide how much he wants to put in up-front; we usually prefer that he/she pays the immediate costs that we have to pay out - ISBN (£10 - unless you provide your own ISBN) and printer set-up costs (about £50) - so usually about £60 - unless the author truly can't contribute that, either, in which case we put that in, too.

Of course, we have to be convinced (a) that the book is marketable, and (b) that the author is going to go all out to make sales on his book - otherwise we're throwing our money and time away.) Marketing and selling of the book is up to the author; you get out what you put in. We help where we can, but the publicity and hard sales are up to the author.

2. CO-PRODUCED BOOKS:

You cover all the basic costs - and we provide our own input, editing, proofreading, time or knowledge. You pay just the actual costs of your own choices (eg ISBN number, print runs, delivery) - and you get a higher royalty on book sales, depending what costs you have covered. We discuss this before contracting.

3. AUTHOR FUNDED (or SELF-PUBLISHED):

You pay all the costs to produce the book, including cover production, proofreading, editing, layout, print runs, etc. If you supply your own ISBN and are going to administer the book entirely by yourself, then you get 100% of income. All yours. If you want us to organise the ISBN and administer the book orders and payments etc, then your royalties are 75% of income.
